Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue or capsule that normally forms around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant. Capsular contraction is more common following infection, hematomas, or seromas (collection of watery portion of blood).
Implant Rupture
Though generally safe, breast implants are medical devices and they can fail. If detected early enough, replacing a ruptured breast implant, particularly saline-filled breast implants, is similar to replacing a battery in a battery compartment.
Dissatisfaction
No surgeon or implant manufacturer can guarantee the success of any surgery. Some patients may be disappointed with the results of their surgery. Results vary in breast asymmetry, displacement, nipple location, breast shape and size, and loss of sensitivity or function.
Not every plastic surgery procedure leads to perfect results. Unnatural results are the most common complaints with plastic surgery. Other imperfections associated with prior plastic surgery include ugly visible scarring, asymmetry or uneven results from one side of the body to the other, and deformity. Some of these unfortunate results are avoidable while others are merely due to how the body heals in response to surgery. All surgery has the potential for complications. Beyond the bleeding, infection, tissue loss, and delayed wound, breast lifts can result in wide or raised scars, altered nipple sensation, asymmetry in breasts, and enlarged areolas.
If detected late, ruptured silicone implants can cause thickening of scar tissue around the implant, which can lead to breast deformity and pain. Delayed replacement or removal of ruptured breast implants can be more complicated.
There are four grades of capsular contracture. The Baker Grades I through IV are: Grade I - the breast is normally soft and looks natural; Grade II - the breast is a little firm but looks normal; Grade III - the breast is firm and looks abnormal (visible distortion); Grade IV - the breast is hard, painful and looks abnormal (greater distortion).
